Woody's Movie Review 13

OK here goes,

I just watched "Alpha Dog" starring among other Justin Timberlake and Bruce Willis. If you enjoy a movie that has the swear setting on constant and the drug use setting on overload, then this is your movie. However for me it rates only 2 penguins. It got 2 because it is based on a true story and kind of interesting in that respect.

I also saw "Love at Stake" with Kelly Preston. This is a spoof of the salem witch trials. It made me chuckle a few times and was OK but not great 2 1/2 penguins.

If you want a good movie try "Traitor" starring Don Cheadle. It is a movie centered around the fight against terrorism. It is awesome especially the end. 4 penguins.

Also good is "Reindeer Games" with Gary Sinise and Ben affleck. Affleck is just released from prison when he is made to help rob a casino with Sinise and his crew. 5 Santas go in to rob a casino and this movie happens. 4 penguins.

Beware 80's Self Help Slogan

Recently at the Church I attend (LCBC) we went through a series about Solomon. We talked about how Solomon had it all. I mean he had it ALL! Check it out he was RICH (beyond Bill Gates) and he was WISE (still considered by many the wisest man ever). And yet as Solomon went about experiencing every worldly pleasure he came to the conclusion that it is all is meaningless under the sun like chasing after the wind. Out of that series I took a simple phrase that has helped me many times already. Now it sounds a little self help seminar-ish but I have found when faced with a decision or a situation, it helps me to say the phrase. And that phrase is "Trust God, Do Good, Enjoy Life". Simple, yes. Well it has helped me so I share it with you. I wouldn't think of taking the credit. I heard this several times throughout this series. And whoever thought it up, I think they would say that the real author is God himself. God wants us to be happy and for me if I can stay on the right path I will be happy. This is just another tool in the arsenal. It may work for you it may not but I think the key point is find something that works, and don't stop using it.

Am I REALLY a Picky Eater?

I have recently been called a "picky eater" and I am not sure if that label applies to me. The reason I believe it was stated is because I don't like, no wait that's not strong enough, because I DESPISE onions. Let me just state for the record that there are a few things on my personal VMD (Vegetables of Mass Disgust) list but I do enjoy a wide range of veggies. Such as...

Cauliflower, Broccoli, Corn, Carrots, Green Beans, Potatoes, Beets, Yams, Mushrooms, Spinach, Asparagus and my personal favorite Brussel Sprouts.

But because I will not let certain veggies into my system all of the sudden I am a picky eater. We all have things we don't like. As for me it wouldn't bother me if certain vegetables were made extinct. I would say goodbye to the Peppers, Lima Beans, Peas and of course the dreaded Onion.

Also if I found out that my friend was coming over for dinner I would not cook a dish with something they hate in it just to try and get them to enjoy it. I have been tested many times and have found the onion on (I figure) almost all of the occasions.

I would not say you are a picky eater for not liking Brussel Sprouts, but since I don't like Onions I am some sort of freak. Well I say Onion Haters Unite! We can defeat these vegetables if we band together! Ask not what your taste buds can do for you ask what you can do for you taste buds!

Woody's Movie Review 12

Well since I have been laid off, my DVD player is running on overdrive. So here is the I lost my job edition of Woody's Movie Review.

I watched "Inside Man" starring Clive Owen as a bank robber and Denzel Washington as a detective trying to negotiate with him. This is the second time I have seen this film and it was much better this time I give it a strong 4 penguins. The first time I saw it was in the theater. I had been up since about 5 am and the movie didn't start till after 9 pm so I may have nodded off a few times.

Next is "Body of Lies" with Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe. DiCaprio is overseas trying to get info and track down bad guys while Crowe is in the states running things. It was OK but not great and the ending just kind of ended. 3 penguins.

I saw "Flash of Genius" starring Greg Kinnear as the man who invented the intermittent windshield washer. It was a drama but for me it was boring. One thing this movie did do is confirm my utter hatred for the Ford Motor Company. 2 penguins, barely.

I saw "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" with Uma Thurman and Luke Wilson. It is supposed to be a comedy but I wasn't laughing. 2 penguins.

And now the grand finale, "Burn After Reading" staring Brad Pitt and John Malkovich among others. I don't know what was worse the plot or the acting. This movie shows you can get a bunch of "high caliber talent" and still make a bad movie. This movie could be renamed "Burn Before Watching" or "Dumb and Dumber Work for the CIA". 1 penguin. I must admit there are probably people who will like this movie. Especially if you enjoy a farce about affairs and morons.

Woody's Movie Review 11

This review addresses the lack of exposure for nature's finest animal the Penguin.

I recently watched "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" and it gets a 3 penguin rating (I thought the first one was better). It features the voices of Ben Stiller and Chris Rock among others. But a small (too small in my opinion) part of the movie was the role that the penguins played. I mean really they built the first plane and when that one crashed the built another one. Penguins, flightless birds, building 2 aircraft that's awesome.

Anyway over the years the penguin has not gotten as much media attention as I would like, so check out these birds who broke through and "made it".

The penguins of "March of the Penguins". There are too many to name, but I think one was named Edgar.

How about the guys from "Surf's Up" Cody, Big Z and the rest.

I didn't see "Happy Feet" but there are a lot of penguins in that one.

Who could forget Chilly Willy who worked for the Walter Lantz Studio in about 50 cartoons.

One of my all time favorites is Tennessee Tuxedo always on the trail of a good scheme with his walrus pal Chumley.

There is a Bugs Bunny cartoon where he gets lost and ends up helping a little penguin evade a hungry Eskimo. I don't remember his name though.

So for the few who made it congrats, and to those trying to get in keep going your day will come. And what about a feature length movie with those fun loving penguins from the "Madagascar" movies. If they can hijack a boat they could do anything.

YPEL Final Report

Well the season is complete and we have another tie.

Dave 158-92 / 0.632 %
Susan 158-92 / 0.632 %
Bruce 164-102 / 0.617 %
Kevin 160-106 / 0.602 %
Cassie 133-133 / 0.500 %
Fill 128-138 / 0.481 %

Congrats go out to the winners and the banquet date(s) have yet to be confirmed. It was a great season and our league profit margin was a robust 78%. We have not yet decided on the location for the summer meetings but I have narrowed it down to 5 possibilities:

1) Honolulu, Hawaii
2) Wall, South Dakota
3) Farmington, New Mexico
4) Atlantic City, New Jersey
5) Lost Springs, Wyoming

We haven't gotten proposals from all the candidate cities yet so a decision is pending. The topics for discussion include;

Changing the division names to be more unique and reflective of the geographic areas. Some possibilities include the Keystone Division and the Sunshine Division; The Amish Paradise Division and The Gang Related Violence Division; The Four Seasons Division and The 20 Pound Mosquito Division; The Mountaintop Division and The How Did Sand Get In My Underwear Division.

Accepting or rejecting the application for removal from the league by Cassie. She hates to do it but feels we may not be able to contact her when the next season rolls around.

Deciding if we want to expand or not.

Determining the official products of our league. As the commissioner I have decided the Official drink of the YPEL will be Turkey Hill Green Tea.

Discussing a new format for our weekly picks.

Coming up with names for your individual teams. I think they should reflect alliances with your NFL team. I have chosen to be the Lancaster Ambush (a group of tigers is called an ambush).

Accepting the move of Bruce's team from Lancaster to Lititz and construction of their new stadium. Naming rights to be determined.

So think about these topics and be ready to discuss them at length each day from 1:00 to 1:30. I want to leave the rest of the daily schedule open for sightseeing as we will only be there for a week. Let's face it you can't see these cities in one day especially if we are in Lost Springs.

See you at the summer meetings.

Woody's Movie Review 10

Well I just watched "The Express" the other day starring Dennis Quaid as Syracuse football coach Ben Schwartzwalder and Rob Brown as running back Ernie Davis. This one is a 5 penguin guarantee. Ernie Davis was a black running back for the Orangemen when racial tensions in America were very high. Not only is this a story of an athlete who was gone too soon (Davis died at 23 from leukemia), but of perseverance and lessons learned. A great sports movie and a great American triumph movie. The only downside for me was seeing the headlines of Penn State losing to Syracuse.

While I am thinking of sports movies; there certainly have been some great ones. So I present Woody's Greatest Sports Movies. 5 penguins all around.

RACING
"Days of Thunder" starring Tom Cruise and Robert Duvall.
"Stroker Ace" starring Burt Reynolds and Jim Nabors. Fastest chicken in the south!
"Cars" with the voices of Owen Wilson and Paul Newman. Lightning McQueen is a car who learns something about life while stranded in the small town of Radiator Springs.
"LeMans" starring Steve McQueen

FOOTBALL
"Remember the Titans" starring Denzel Washington and Will Patton as football coaches for a newly integrated high school.
"The Longest Yard" starring Burt Reynolds as a former NFL player who winds up in prison and is forced to play against the guards in a game of football with the help of his fellow convicts.
"Friday Night Lights" starring Billy Bob Thorton as a high school football coach in Texas trying to win a state championship.
"Necessary Roughness" starring Scott Bakula as a quarterback called back into action when the Armidillos are all suspended for their actions off the field.
"We Are Marshall" is the dramatic story of a town, a school and many people dealing with the tragic loss of almost the entire Thundering Herd football team in a plane crash.
"Invincible" stars Mark Wahlberg as Vince Papale a Philly bartender who makes it onto the Eagles. Look for the Bengals whipping the Eagles butts in the opening scene.

HOCKEY
"Miracle" starring Kurt Russell; USA hockey finally beats the Russians on their way to the gold.
"Mystery, Alaska" starring Russell Crowe; a group of guys from Alaska take up the challenge of playing the New York Rangers.
"Slap Shot" starring Paul Newman and the great Hanson Brothers as teammates for the Chiefs as the team is going under.

BOXING
"Rocky" Sylvester Stalone is Rocky Balboa in these great movies. Well all but Rocky V.

SOCCER
"Victory" Sylvester Stalone is a goalie in a POW camp in Germany when they decide to have a soccer match pitting the POWs against the German national team.

RODEO
"Stir Crazy" with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor as unfortunate guys who get sent to prison where Wilder discovers his hidden rodeo talents.

Go rent some of these today and get ready to stand up and cheer.

Enjoy Your TAINTED Super Bowl Win Steelers Fans!

Did anyone else notice the officiating error in the first quarter. Not to say that it would have changed the game but in my mind it definitely adds an asterisk to the win.

If you watch the game in the first quarter it is Steelers ball 2nd and 1. The hand off goes to Parker and he runs for a first down he is stopped at 13:03. The Steelers take their time line up and get ready for the next play. On the screen in a little red box is the play clock as it ticks down to zero. And no play yet. When the ball is finally snapped it is at 12:15 to go. 48 SECONDS LATER! The play clock is only 40 seconds! NO flag! No Penalty! How could the refs have missed that one! I think if the Steelers are decent human beings they will turn in their super bowl rings and give the Cardinals the Vince Lombardi trophy.

Just a thought.

YPEL Playoffs Week 2 & 3 Results

First of all let me say that tough economic times have hit us here at the YPEL Headquarters. I had to layoff 137 people in the past month. Included in the layoffs were Stacey the company massage therapist, Gary the company high five guy, Juan the company coffee runner, Jill the company coat check girl and Eddie the company Turkey Hill Tea Supplier (that one really hit the commissioner's office hard). Anyway we must all try to move on and get our jobs done. So here are the results from the last couple weeks.

Dave (whose Giants were eliminated in week 2 of the playoffs) went 1-3 and 2-0 for a % of .635

Susan (whose Bears were eliminated in the final week of the regular season) went 3-1 and 1-1 for a % of .631

Bruce (whose Eagles were eliminated in week 3 of the playoffs) went 2-2 and 1-1 for a % of .619

Kevin (it could be argued that the Bengals were eliminated in week 1) went 2-2 and 0-2 for a % of .604

Cassie (whose Packers were eliminated late in the regular season) went 1-3 and 0-2 for a % of .502

Fill (whose Panthers were eliminated in week 2 of the playoffs) went 1-3 and 1-1 for a % of 483

It should be noted that first place is still up for grabs. With a win by Susan and a loss by Dave there would be only the second tie in YPEL history. Just something to keep in mind as you pick.

We all (I think) have had a fun year and look forward to the championship banquet. Whenever that may occur.

Our Economic Crisis

Let me just say I love sports. I mean I LOVE SPORTS! There is nothing better than a relaxing afternoon with some sporting event on. It doesn't matter if it is Penn State Football, Bengals Football (yes they still have a team), Penguins Hockey, UND Hockey or NASCAR. Sports are great. However as much as I enjoy sports is it really polite for these guys who are getting paid to play a game to ask for millions and MILLIONS of dollars? These salaries seem outrageous on a normal day, but I think we can agree things are not normal. With news of company layoffs or companies going out of business. With our unemployment rates skyrocketing and people fearing that each day may be their last. With the price of everything going up and no end in sight. Is it really the right thing for these athletes to be holding out so they can get another 10 or 15 million dollar bump in their paycheck. I am living paycheck to paycheck and these guys have the gaul to demand more money. And what's worse is they are getting it. The George Steinbrenners of the world must be printing money or have the key to Fort Knox because the salaries for these players keeps going up and up. Hopefully there are players giving some of their money to worthy causes. Now I am not saying these guys should not be paid, I am just saying keep it reasonable. And PS raising the price for tickets and concessions is not the way to pay the salaries. Because if we can't come to the games anymore who will sign your paychecks then?

Sometimes The Path Of Good Intentions Is Paved With Leaks

Recently I went to a friends house to help out with a "simple" plumbing job. Did you take notice of those quotation marks; well I didn't see them till much later.

Anyway I went to my friends house to re-install a toilet as she had the floor of the bathroom re-done. Simple job; estimated time 30 min. Well I got there and one of the valves for the sink was leaking. So I shut off the water and took the valve apart. I noticed that it was not in good shape. I took the other 2 valves apart and noticed the same thing. So I told her I would run to a store real quick and get what I needed. The store in this story shall remain nameless but let me say that the primary color you see at this store is orange and the name rhymes with Gnome Repo. Anyway I found what I needed and went back to the house. I put the valves in after a little struggle and got someone to go in the basement to turn on the water. Then I heard a spraying sound, "TURN IT OFF!" I said casually. I cut away a little drywall so I could see and then had them turn the water on again. "AHHHH TURN IT OFF, TURN IT OFF!!" I remarked. I then told my friend there was a small leak in the wall and I would have to cut open her freshly painted drywall to fix it. Remember those quotation marks. I cut the wall open and found the problem. I went back to the store with a list of materials. I then did what you never want to do in those stores, I asked someone for help. I would have had a better chance asking a group of kindergartners to do my taxes. I got no help. So I looked for what I wanted and not finding it I went with my second choice; fleeing the country. No seriously I found what I thought would work and headed back to the house. While I was gone an order for dinner was placed and I received a cheese steak. It was very good, THANK YOU! Because it was getting late and I did want to see the NHL All Star game on TV that night I decided to eat while I worked OR work while I ate. I cut out the leaky pipe and replaced it with new pipe and fittings. I soldered all but one joint when I couldn't go any further. I had one of those small blue propane tanks and they work well. The thing is they don't work so well if they are tilted down and since that last joint was close to the floor I just couldn't get it. So after a bit of frustration I got out my white flag and surrendered. I left for the evening promising to try again later. The next day I went to Hajoca. I like Hajoca because they had what I wanted in the first place. I called my friend and went back to the house. I went upstairs and against my better judgement started to work. It actually went smoothly and I was able to make the repairs. I then tried to set the toilet. After taking some time to remove the old caulk and some ornery floor tile I set the toilet hooked up the supply line and turned on the water. As far as I know everything is OK to this day. There is another project there but we'll have to see about that.

PS My Dad taped the All Star game for me the East beat the West 12-11 in a shootout, and Malkin from the Penguins had a sweet goal. Thanks Dad.

Woody's Movie Review 9

Now a word about sequels. Sometimes they are fantastic and sometimes even the first movie wasn't great. But as long as the movie industry wants our money they are going to keep cranking them out.

Let's start with some of my favorites.
The "Die Hard" series now in these movies John McLain (Bruce Willis) takes all kinds of bad guys. There is Alan Rickman ("Die Hard"), William Sadler ("Die Hard 2"), Jeremy Irons ("Die Hard with a Vengeance") and Timothy Olyphant ("Live Free or Die Hard"). Now every one of these movies is pure cinematic gold. And if they have to push Bruce Willis around in a wheelchair to make "Die Hard 13 My Social Security Check is Missing" I will probably give up my hard earned cash for John McClain to fight someone his own age maybe Methuselah will be available.

Another one that always gets me is the "Lethal Weapon" series here we double our fun by going with partners Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover). These two also expend large amounts of ammunition and sarcastic comments as they chase criminal scum through 4 movies. Drug smugglers, South African diplomats, crooked former cops and an Asian gang are in the sights of these two; and they always put away the criminals (sometimes they put them away in the morgue) (make that usually).

Now we have the "Back to the Future" franchise. These were good but I prefer the original to the other two; especially that second one.

And how about "Highlander", the quote of the movie is "There can be only one!" After seeing these movies I know it means there can be only one decent Highlander film. Here you have a great movie that is torn down a little by sequels that make no sense. You have dead characters coming back and the whole point of the first movie is disregarded when the second one is made. They should have left it alone.

And in keeping with the statement I made in another Movie Review "Chevy Chase used to be funnier" I give you 2 of my favorite Chevy movies Fletch and Fletch lives. Both are hilarious as Fletch plays a reporter with a knack for disguises working on stories for the newspaper he works for.

Woody's Movie Review 8

This week I watched "Tropic Thunder" starring Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. I give it 2 penguins, there was mediocre acting along with a lot of foul language and a so-so plot line. These two along with others are trying to make a war movie about a heroic soldier from the Vietnam war. I had some issues with the plot as I come from a military background and have respect for our soldiers who fought on foreign soil. If I were you I would let this one stay MIA.

I also saw "Bangkok Dangerous" with Nicolas Cage. This one gets 2 penguins as well. Cage plays an assassin for hire who finds he has a conscience after meeting a deaf girl and going on several dates with her. Lots of gunfire and explosions but I won't be buying this one.

One that I do like is "A Sound of Thunder" an easy 5 penguins. It stars Ed Burns as a scientist/businessman/big game hunter. The movie is set in the future and Burns works for a company that allows people (with big enough wallets) to go back in time and hunt a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The rule is that you can't touch anything. It is The Butterfly Effect; a butterfly flapping its wings in Pennsylvania will cause a hurricane off the coast of Japan. Everything we do is a chain reaction. So when something goes wrong on one of the hunts in the past the future is dramatically changed.

Along those lines is "The Butterfly Effect" with Ashton Kutcher. Ashton plays a guy who can go back and change the past in order to make the future better for him and his friends. He tries numerous times to make things "right" with mixed results. He finally comes up with the perfect solution...I won't spoil it for you. It is worth a look at 3 penguins.

One Just Wasn't Enough

Did anyone else see the article in the Intel last week about the man who received 2 DUIs in 90 min? According to the article this guy was stopped in Lititz, PA at 12:45 am because he was seen driving erratically. When the officer gave him a breathalyzer test he rang the bell at .158. The legal limit is .08 for those keeping track. This man was released at about 2:00 am and advised he would receive a summons. He didn't drive away from the station but he ended up behind the wheel again and again was pulled over. According to the article he was pulled over at 2:09 am. Again he was given a breathalyzer and this time only got a .141. When asked what destination was so important the man responded "I have no idea."
